Procedures Regarding Print Media in Alternate Formats

SDS determines eligibility for alternate format materials as an accommodation through a review of the student's disability documentation and meeting with the student.

Requesting Alternate Formats

  1. To request E-text or other accessible formats, students who qualify for must sign an Electronic Text Distribution Agreement. This agreement clarifies the standards to which students will be held, particularly around copyright issues.
  2. Students must also submit an Alternative Format Request Form to SDS for each document being requested. (This form can also be completed on line at: http://sds.cornell.edu/sdsdocconv/DCCForm.php.) Due to the potentially lengthy process of conversion, we recommend that the student submit this form immediately after registering for classes. However, the request should be received by SDS at least four weeks before the material is needed, if possible.
  3. SDS will work with the publisher to obtain an electronic version of textbooks and other materials, if available. This E-text will then be provided to the student by e-mail, on a CD, or as a Braille document, as needed.
  4. If desired, the student can manipulate the E-text into other formats such as MP3 and other audio files. Assistive Technology such as screen readers, Braille printers*, and E-text readers are available to students in the Assistive Technology Centers in Mann, Olin, and Uris Libraries, as well as in the CIT Labs in RPCC and Stimson Hall.

* Mann Library currently houses the only Braille Printer available to students
